Winter can be a hard time for plants, especially in Harrington Grove where we are prone to frost and intense cold snaps. Growth slows down, and problems become evident.

But there are many things you can do to help your garden cope with the cooler weather:

  • Plants to prune when bare include hydrangeas, wisteria and grapes.
  • Early August is the best time to give gardenias their main pruning.
  • Cuttings of frangipanis will make instant new trees; leave them to dry for a few weeks, then pot or plant into a sandy mix.
  • Cut ornamental grasses almost to ground level to rejuvenate and spray lawns for bindii as soon as their ferny leaves appear.
  • Hold off pruning roses until July in most areas and August in cold zones.
  • Feed citrus in late July, using an all-purpose citrus fertiliser.
  • Water smarter at this time of year. Water first thing in the morning a nice, deep drink a couple of times a week is far more beneficial! Always check soil moisture before watering, don’t waste your precious water.
  • Top up mulch on your veggie patches, herb gardens and ornamental beds, especially important for weed suppression at this time of year. Mulch to a depth of about 7cm. Keep mulch clear of plant stems, especially young seedlings.

Happy gardening and stay warm.
